"Beautiful Beginnings" Design Variation

Use simple mixed media techniques to add your personal touch to the "Beautiful Beginnings" Social Artworking design.

You must purchase the original pattern to be able to complete these designs. 

Approximate Working Time: 3-4 hours

 Social Artworking colors used:

  • chrome orange
  • chrome yellow
  • Phthalo  blue
  • green oxide
  • mars black
  • phthalo green
  • phthalo red
  • bright red
  • yellow oxide
  • titanium white

Americana Matte Decoupage

Social Artworking Brushes used:

  • ¾” flat
  • No. 2 round
  • Social Artworking Marker

Other Social Artworking Supplies Needed:

12”x12” Social Artworking Canvas, pencil or stylus, paper tape, palette, water source, grey transfer paper, scissors, cosmetic sponges, stencils of choice and scrapbook paper of choice.

STEP ONE:

Use a pencil to trace the 12x12 canvas on the back of scrapbook paper of choice. Use scissors to cut paper to fit canvas. Then use (Matte) decoupage to adhere the paper to the canvas. Rinse brush. Let dry completely. 


TRANSFER PATTERN

Trace and transfer pattern onto the three different canvases. See methodology for detailed instructions.

 STEP TWO:

  • Use ¾” Flat Brush to mix (5)parts Titanium White with a small amount of Phthalo Green. Use mix to paint the entire background. Rinse brush. Save mix for STEP THREE (bullet 1).

  • Use ¾” Flat Brush to mix (3)parts Chrome Orange with (2)parts Titanium White with (1)parts Chrome Yellow. Use mix to paint the entire background. Rinse brush.Save mix for STEP THREE (bullet 2).

STEP THREE:

  • Use ¾” Flat Brush to add (2)parts Titanium White to the previous mix in STEP THREE (bullet 1). Rinse brush. Then use a stencil of choice and pounce on the new mix with your stencil on the background. Wash stencil.

  • Use ¾” Flat Brush to add (2)parts Titanium White to the previous mix in STEP THREE (bullet 2). Rinse brush. Then use a stencil of choice and pounce on the new mix with your stencil on the background. Wash stencil.

STEP FOUR:

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush with Chrome Orange transitioning into Chrome Yellow. Then with the transition colors paint the shapes on the bottom wings as well. Rinse brush.

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush with Phthalo Blue transitioning into Phthalo Green then into Green Oxide,and ending with Chrome Yellow. On the bottom wings transition from Green Oxide to Chrome Yellow. Then use Phthalo Blue in the middle wind section. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement.

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush to mix (3)parts Titanium White with a small amount of Phthalo Blue and a small amount of Phthalo Green. (save mix for STEP FIVE: bullet 2).Use mix to paint upper wings. Then add more Phthalo Blue and Green to make some darker mixes for the bottom wing shapes. Rinse brush.

STEP FIVE:

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush to mix (2)parts Titanium White with (1)part Mars Black. Use mix to paint bottom wings. Then add (2)more parts Titanium White to that mix to fill in the middle wings section. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement.

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush with Bright Red to fill in some shapes in the wings. Then add (3)parts Titanium White and (1)part Chrome Orange. Use the new mix to fill in more shapes. Then add (2)more parts Titanium White for the shapes. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement. Then use No. 2 Round Brush with mix from STEP FOUR:bullet 3 to fill in butterfly body and middle wings. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement.

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush with Yellow Oxide to paint shapes in the wings and body. Then continue with Yellow Oxide on bottom wing tips transitioning into Titanium White. Rinse brush.

STEP SIX:

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush with Mars Black to paint butterfly body, middle of wings,wing shapes, antennas. Do not rinse brush and add more Chrome Orange over middle wing section. Then mix a little Titanium White with a very small amount of Mars Black to also put over the middle wing section. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement.

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush with Mars Black to paint sections of the butterfly. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement. 

  • Use No. 2 Round Brush to mix (3)parts Phthalo Blue with (1)part Titanium White with a small amount of Mars Black. Use mix to paint wing shapes, antennas, and middle of wings. Rinse brush. Refer to photo for placement.

STEP SEVEN:

  • Use ¾” Flat Brush to mix (1)parts Bright Red with (1)parts Chrome Orange with (2)parts Titanium White. Use mix with a cosmetic sponge to pounce around the edges of the canvas wrapping around the front as well.

 STEP EIGHT:

  • Print a quote of choice onto copy paper. Use ¾” Flat Brush with Chrome Yellow to paint over the first word. Rinse brush. Then use same brush with a mix of (1)part Chrome Yellow with a small amount of Green Oxide for the middle word. Rinse brush. Then use same brush to mix (1)part Chrome Orange with (1)part  Chrome Yellow for the last word. Rinse brush. Then use scissors to cut the words out.

 STEP NINE:

Use ¾” Flat Brush with Matte Decoupage to adhere the quote words separately to each canvas. Rinse brush.

STEP TEN:

Use the Social Artworking Marker to outline words and add some outlining to the Orange canvas.
